Except for a quibble about the percentage of Ellis Island immigrants who were Jewish, I want to give you my highest praise for your March column -- excellently written and filled with information about the history of America that has largely been neglected and forgotten, even though these are (many of them) within my own lifetime. My maternal grandmother Carrie Joslin, a fine poet in her younger days, my mother Lena May Carroll, and my aunt Linnie Jane Burks, also poets, suffered from Alzheimer's which is said to run on the maternal side. I try to keep active, keep my health, and pray daily it doesn't strike me.

My word, L. C. -- you Maine people must have a whole different world of bumper stickers to draw on. I'm pretty sure we don't have a secret police of bumper sticker Nazis down here in Texas, but I've never seen any of these. By the way (small point) "arse" is not bowdlerizing -- it's the actual Anglo-Saxon word for backside. "Ass" is the bowdlerized version and should refer only to the long-eared, braying quadruped. But of course the people with that word on their bumper don't know this. Happy New Year!
