Cormorants

By John I. Blair

Word is out this week;
The Feds will finally knuckle under
To the sporting PACs
And agree to say
It’s okay
To kill as many cormorants as we want.

And after all,
Who has better right to fish
In American waters:
Common predators,
Or God’s own humans,
Given dominion over Earth
And all its creatures
By fiat domini?

So what if bird huggers
Pop a vein
And say that we’re insane?

That just makes me chuckle.

I plan to still be casting bait
When cormorants,
Like those tasty passenger pigeons,
Are just memories.
