Possums in The Rain

Possums in the rain
Amble slowly
As they feed.

The shining water
Beads on their backs,
Like tears in the dim light.

Their needy muzzles
Munch across the bugs
And scattered birdseed,

Snuffling up nutrition,
Packing on the fat,
Stoking for cold nights,

So they can maintain
Gene transmission
Another thirty million years.
