First Butterfly

Looking out my window
I saw today
Spring’s first butterfly

Frisking
Aimlessly from
Flower to flower,

Seemingly indifferent
To fears
Of predators, of storms.

And yet
I know enough
To reassure myself

It will find food,
A place to lay
Its precious eggs,

And endless futures
For butterflies
In this risky world.
