Three Friends

I had a happy time today,
Sitting at a table sharing food
With two men I liked,
Though neither looked the same
As me nor shared my history.

Nor did they with each other;
We were all three unique,
As humans always are,
Living our lives the best we can,
Giving our love when possible.

Our roots appeared to be
From Earth’s ends,
One from sun-baked Asia,
Two from different bits
Of Europe’s chilly lands.

That didn’t matter,
Nor should it, for we were
As anyone could tell
Fundamentally the same:
Humans, friends.

Is that so hard
To remember?
